2014 All-star Catcher Turned Pitt Volunteer Assistant Coach

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – (PTTP) After a successful eight-year MLB career crowned by a 2014 All-Star appearance, Devin Mesoraco traded in the cleats to pursue a coaching job. Ahead of the 2021 season, Mesoraco joined the Pitt coaching staff, electing to coach the college game rather than coaching in the big leagues. His reason? It’s more intense than the pros.

“Every game down here kinda feels like a playoff game because there’s only 56 games. Every game is so incredibly important you know you gotta go out there and compete the best you can and try to win each game.”

Despite Pittsburgh being a rival opponent for most of his playing career, the veteran catcher chose the steel city as his new home partly because of its closeness to his hometown of Punxsutawney, PA.

“Later in my playing career we decided to move down to Pittsburgh and that obviously played a role, I don’t think I would be coaching anywhere else in college. To be at Pitt and to be with the program that I am and to live at home you knw that’s what I would want and so far it has worked out really good for everyone.”

With three new catchers on board for this 2022 Pitt baseball season, Mesoraco, now in his second year coaching, looks to share some of his significant league experience with this young catching staff, and hopefully turn out another winning season.
