PITTSBURGH (PTTP) – Pittsburgh residents are gearing up for an astronomical event of epic proportions as the city prepares to witness the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024.

This rare event for Pittsburgh will not offer the complete spectacle of totality, as the city is situated approximately 100 miles off the path of totality. Nonetheless, the anticipated 97% coverage promises a visually stunning display.

Safety is paramount during the eclipse. Directly viewing the sun without proper protection can result in eye damage. Sunglasses are insufficient for this purpose; only certified solar eclipse glasses, which feature filters hundreds of times stronger than sunglasses, provide adequate protection. Look for the “ISO” insignia on glasses to ensure they are certified from a reputable source.

The Carnegie Science Center will serve as the premier destination for eclipse enthusiasts, offering a cosmic carnival of activities and experiences to commemorate this rare celestial event. Attendees will have access to special solar observation gear, including a cutting-edge solar telescope, and can enjoy live streaming of NASA footage on the iconic Buhl Planetarium dome.

“The Solar Eclipse Extravaganza promises to be an eclipse like never before, offering Pittsburgh residents a unique and unforgettable way to witness this cosmic spectacle,” said a spokesperson for the Science Center.

Mark your calendars for Monday, April 8, and prepare for an experience that will leave viewers starstruck.
