University of Pittsburgh Women’s Basketball Team retires #12 in honor of Jennifer Bruce

Pittsburgh, PA (PTTP) – On Feb. 19, the University of Pittsburgh retired the number of one of greatest women to ever touch a basketball in Pitt history.

Jennifer Bruce was a Pitt Panther from 1981-1985 and wore the number 12 during her time playing for the Pitt women’s basketball team. She was an all time leading scorer with 2,295 points and averaged 20.5 points per game. She also averaged 8.9 rebounds during her time at Pitt and is the 5th all time leader with 998.

Her jersey number 12 was retired at the women’s basketball game against Notre Dame at halftime. She was joined by friends, family, former teammates, and former coaches. Her jersey number is now hung in the Petersen Event Center next to former teammate Lorri Johnson. This is another way to solidify her legacy as a Pitt Panther, since in 2020 Bruce was also inducted into the University of Pittsburgh Athletic Hall of Fame.

Bruce came to Pitt to pursue her degree in nursing and has achieved that while still living in the Pittsburgh area. After finishing her degree, she went on to build a family and even went into coaching high school basketball and AAU.

Jennifer was interviewed on our show on February 24th. To learn more and to watch the full interview, go to our Youtube channel @pitttothepoint7581 to hear about her experience.
