PITTSBURGH (PTTP) – Jon Hill is a Pitt Alumni (2005) and an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker. His debut feature-length film “Above the Clouds” is a story about the loss of a father, and dealing with what comes after. The film features “a lost dog, a cassette tape, and a backyard comedy show [that leads] two Asian American strangers on a day they’ll never forget” and takes place over the course of a single day.
SCENE at Pittsburgh, one of the University’s student film clubs, will be hosting Jon Hill and his cinematographer Nathan Cornett for a screening and Q&A workshop for the film. The event will take place Friday, April 7, at 7 pm in Alumni Hall, Room 323. The event is free and open to the public, but those interested are encouraged to RSVP at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/above-the-clouds-by-jon-hill-a-pitt-film-premiere-tickets-594462803247?aff=ebdssbdestsearch.
Hill explained the value that Pitt provided him, specifically through UPTV, the student television station. Both he and Cornett anticipated the day it would all come “full circle:” when they returned to Pitt to display their work.
When asked what advice he would give to future students, Hill referenced the famous Mike Tyson quote: “Discipline is doing what you hate, but doing it like you love it.” Hill explained past struggles with the business aspect of filmmaking and overcoming them with dedication. Developing the skills to tackle all parts of the storytelling process confidently makes it more exciting to get to the fun part: day one of shooting.
