PITTSBURGH (PTTP) – On Oct. 27, 2018, 11 worshippers were killed in an antisemitic shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue. Five years later, the site of this attack is undergoing a redesign led by architect Daniel Libeskind and Studio Libeskind.
To keep the memory of those lost alive and to shed light on the atrocities that the worshippers faced, the redesign will include a memorial to the victims and a museum addressing antisemitism. A synagogue for future worshippers is included in the redesign.
Sections of the original sanctuary walls will be preserved, as community members and designers felt it was important to keep pieces of the original building.
Architect Daniel Libeskind’s previous work includes the World Trade Center redevelopment (the Ground Zero skyscraper) and the Jewish Museum Berlin.
The rebuilding of the Tree of Life Synagogue is expected to begin this summer and be completed in about two and a half years.
