The Pittsburgh Pirates’ Plan for a New Plaza in the North Shore

PITTSBURGH, PA (PTTP)- Pittsburgh Stadium Authority voted on March 21 to sell a large section of land next to PNC Park to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The land is at the corner of Mazeroski Way and General Robinson Street and sold for $569,467. The Pirates will be turning the area into a 30,000-square-foot plaza with a 916-square-foot LED screen to screen Pirate games and events. Along with this, there will be a stage, concession stands, a beer garden, seating options and a place for yard games.

Executive director of the Stadium Authority, Aaron Waller stated that the public benefits that will come from the plaza are why the authority approved the sale. He continues to say, “it will enhance not just the experience for Pirates games, but all public events.” Waller stated that an apartment complex near the area was also sold and is currently under construction. The ground floor of this complex will house a restaurant that will eventually open into the plaza.

Looking toward the future, Waller said that the Pirates and Steelers have an option to develop projects on the land where Three Rivers Stadium once stood. The sale for this project is a continuation. “It has been some years coming to find projects like this, so it’s a good thing to see some progress,” Waller said about the plaza. With Pittsburgh’s Planning Commission approving this project about a month ago, fans are excited to see the development of the new space.

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to have an exciting month with a successful opening day on March 28th. After an exciting 12-inning game against the Miami Marlins, the Pirates came out on time with a 6-5 win at loan Depot Park. Their next game in the series is on March 29 at 7:10pm. The Pirates play their first home game against the Baltimore Orioles on April 5 at 4:12pm.
