PITTSBURGH, PA – Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey said Monday his administration will not
cooperate with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement – or ICE – emphasizing the city’s
commitment to supporting its immigrant communities.
“My administration will not work with ICE,” Gainey said at a Pennslyvania Press Club event.
“We will do whatever’s necessary to make our city more welcoming.”
Gainey criticized ICE’s actions, saying they create fear and division, and called on federal leaders
to focus on immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship.
The city reaffirmed its policy that Pittsburgh police do not enforce federal civil immigration
warrants or arrest people based solely on immigration status.
City Controller Rachael Heisler echoed this on social media, saying, “PBP officers are not
immigration agents.”
Gainey’s office also confirmed there has been no evidence of recent ICE raids in Pittsburgh.
