Historic Play Makes a Stop in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Public Theaters

PITTSBURGH, PA (PTTP) — The historic play, “Trouble in Mind,” is coming to Pittsburgh.
The play is about a black actress that really struggles in her career. She is faced with racism and
stereotypes while in the intense world of theatre in New York.

This play was written by Alice Childress, a black female playwright in 1955. It was first seen at
Greenwich Mews Theater in Lower Manhattan where it was very successful. Childress had her
goals set high: she wanted to be the first black female playwright to have their work on
Broadway. She worked for this dream of hers, but was asked to rewrite the ending of the play.
She rewrote it around 15 times and began to not even recognize her piece of work. At this point
she put her dream aside. She ended up passing away in 1994 from cancer at the age of 77.
However this was not the end of her accomplishments. “Trouble in Mind” ended up making it on
Broadway in 2021, 66 years after Childress had written it.

Now it made its way to the Steel City where it will be performed just how Alice Childress wrote
it. The play will run from Feb. 5-23 at the Pittsburgh Public Theater in the Cultural District.
