PITTSBURGH (PTTP) – Middle schoolers and college students alike flocked to movie theaters over the weekend to experience A Minecraft Movie, an adaptation of the 2011 video game Minecraft. While the movie was not projected to succeed at the box office, it surpassed expectations, earning over $160 million in its opening weekend.
Nostalgia coupled with a star-studded cast (Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Jennifer Coolidge) lured Generation Z to the theaters, as many moviegoers sang along to Jack Black’s songs, viscerally reacted to the phrase “chicken jockey,” and wore tuxedos to memorialize this newly iconic film.
The film grossed a total of $163.7 million in the U.S. and Canada, and a total of $313.7 million worldwide. These numbers make the movie number one in the domestic box office, surpassing Captain America: Brave New World.
