PITTSBURGH — Two significant infrastructure projects commenced this week in Pittsburgh’s South Hills, aiming to improve transportation facilities but expected to cause traffic disruptions during construction.

In Castle Shannon, a nearly $3 million renovation of the Park and Ride facility has begun. The project includes repaving the lot, installing new lighting, and adding other amenities. Pittsburgh Regional Transit plans to keep at least 200 of the 507 parking spaces available throughout the construction period. The project is scheduled for completion by October.

Simultaneously, a nearly $20 million project on Route 51 (Clairton Boulevard) is underway, focusing on road improvements between East Bruceton Street and Coal Valley Road. Starting Monday at 8 p.m., southbound traffic will be shifted into the northbound lanes, reducing the roadway to a single lane in each direction until Thursday at 5 a.m. This traffic pattern will continue through mid-June, with only left turns permitted during this phase. The Route 51 project is expected to conclude in late 2026.

Motorists are advised to anticipate delays and consider alternative routes during these construction periods.
