WASHINGTON (AP) — A Maryland man who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador remains in the country, even after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that he must be allowed to return.

Kilmar Ábrego García, a longtime U.S. resident with no criminal record, was deported last month despite ongoing legal appeals. The Supreme Court sided with Ábrego García, stating his removal violated due process and ordering the government to facilitate his return. But El Salvador has so far refused to accept any repatriation effort.

“This is a constitutional failure and a humanitarian crisis,” said attorney Nina Roberts, who represents Ábrego García. “The court has spoken. The government must act.”

The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement it is “working with international partners” to comply with the ruling but provided no timeline.

Ábrego García’s case has drawn national attention as a symbol of bureaucratic dysfunction and the limits of U.S. authority abroad, even after a high court mandate.

His family in Silver Spring continues to wait, hoping the legal victory translates into a homecoming.
