PITTSBURGH (PTTP) — Starting April 2025, Mega Millions tickets will see a price increase from $2 to $5, marking the second adjustment since the game’s inception over two decades ago. This change aims to offer larger starting jackpots, faster-growing prize pools, and enhanced odds for players.
The decision to raise ticket prices is part of a broader strategy to differentiate Mega Millions from other lottery games and attract a wider player base. Joshua Johnston, lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium, stated that research indicates players are comfortable spending $5 on lottery tickets, comparable to other everyday expenses.
In addition to the price increase, several game enhancements are planned:
- Mandatory Megaplier: The Megaplier feature, previously optional, will now be included with every ticket. This multiplier can increase non-jackpot prizes by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or even 10x, up to $10 million.
- Improved Jackpot Odds: Adjustments to the game matrix will improve the odds of winning the jackpot from 1 in 302.5 million to 1 in 290 million.
- Elimination of Breakeven Prizes: All winning tickets will now yield prizes exceeding the $5 ticket cost, ensuring that players receive more than their initial investment.
Local retailers in Pittsburgh are preparing for the upcoming changes. While some players express concern over the price hike, others are optimistic about the potential for larger winnings and better odds.
Mega Millions drawings occur every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 p.m. ET. Tickets are available for purchase in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
As the April 2025 implementation date approaches, lottery officials plan to release further details about these changes. Players are encouraged to stay informed and play responsibly.
