Pittsburgh (PTTP)- On Monday, February 2nd, around 30,000 people from across the country gathered in Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to watch Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast. Phil is the legendary groundhog that predicts the weather on Groundhog Day. He indeed did see his shadow, predicting 6 more weeks of winter weather. Many people were upset with this consensus, but they say Phil is never wrong.

This grand tradition of Phil the groundhog predicting the weather in Punxsutawney has been around since 1887. Legends say that Phil is immortal and will continue to predict our weather! This major tradition that has been around for a long time is something that you won’t want to miss out on next year!

Groundhog Day also lies on one of the first days of Black History Month. Pitt women’s basketball players, Meghan Hollingsworth and Jada Queeley, tell us a little bit about what Black History Month means to them. “Black History Month is a time to reflect about all the people that came before me… and to be grateful for all the sacrifices that they made.”

A primary goal of black history month is to reckon with the past discrimination and racism that has occurred and learn about and grow from those instances. This month, the Pitt community will be holding many celebrations and activities, as this is a time to reflect and rejoice on the things that we have overcome.
