PITTSBURGH (PTTP) — As the term seasonal affective disorder becomes more widely
recognized, many residents of Western Pennsylvania say they feel its effects during the winter
months, when persistent cloud cover, shorter daylight hours and gray skies are the norm.
Fortunately for Pittsburghers, a new pop-up bar in Oakland is offering a creative solution.

The SAD BAR — an acronym for Seasonal Affective Disorder — opened its doors January,
2026, providing a social space for people who want to connect without consuming alcohol.
The bar serves a variety of non-alcoholic drinks, including palomas and ginger beer, often
garnished with fresh orange slices. Rena Zhang, a member of the events and programming team,
said the concept is rooted in addressing the physical and emotional toll of winter.

“In the wintertime, we literally get less vitamin D, so we’re trying to simulate the sun’s energy in
this space,” Zhang said.

Emily Sjoberg, another member of the events and programming team, said the atmosphere helps
bring the bar’s mission to life.

“Once you walk into SAD BAR, there are bright colors and oranges everywhere,” Sjoberg said.
“We have vitamin D lamps throughout the space, and it’s all just really cozy.”

In addition to serving drinks, the SAD BAR hosts events such as trivia nights, The Pitt watch
parties and other social gatherings, creating a space for people to unwind, support their mental
health and connect with others during the winter season.
