PITTSBURGH (PTTP) — A Culinary Medicine course led by Professor Corey Flynn met Feb. 25 in the new University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) teaching kitchen, where students prepared “planetary meals” designed to support both human and environmental health.

Students from nursing, nutrition, and public health customized vegetable-lentil stew recipes to reflect their personal and cultural preferences. The class emphasized collaboration across disciplines while introducing the capabilities of the school’s new classroom-style kitchen.

Patrick D. Gallagher, former chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh, said experiential learning is central to higher education.

“Gaining experience is the soul of the university,” Gallagher said. “Every student should seek from the day they get here to broaden their perspective and try as many new things as they can fit into their life while they’re here at Pitt.”

Maureen Lichtveld, dean of the School of Public Health, and David Beck, interim dean of SHRS, also attended the class.
