PITTSBURGH (PTTP) — A student-led chapter of Girls Inc. of Greater Pittsburgh at the University of Pittsburgh is helping build confidence and opportunity for young girls through mentorship, campus engagement, and hands-on learning.
The program pairs University of Pittsburgh students with elementary- and middle-school girls from across the region, offering guidance in academics, life skills, and career development. The initiative is part of a broader effort by Girls Inc., a national organization focused on empowering girls to be “strong, smart and bold.”
At Pitt, mentors follow structured lesson plans developed by the national organization, emphasizing relationship-building, self-confidence, and personal growth. Activities often include games, journaling, and discussions designed to help participants navigate school and future goals.
“Programs like this are about creating consistent, supportive relationships,” organizers say, noting that mentorship can play a critical role in shaping educational outcomes and self-esteem for young students.
The Pitt chapter has also brought participants directly onto campus through special events. One recent “Field Trip Day” gave girls a chance to tour the university, participate in yoga sessions, receive one-on-one tutoring, and experience dining on campus.
In another event, the group partnered with Girls on the Run to host a 5K color run, raising funds to support programming and expand outreach efforts.
The organization has evolved. Previously known as Strong Women, Strong Girls, the program has expanded to include middle school students and increased its focus on STEM education across the Pittsburgh area.
Leaders say the goal is not only to provide mentorship but also to expose participants to new environments and possibilities, particularly through experiences such as visiting a college campus.
By connecting young girls with college mentors, the Pitt chapter of Girls Inc. aims to create a pipeline of confidence, curiosity, and ambition, one relationship at a time.
