PITTSBURGH (PTTP) — Oakland businesses are bracing for an influx of visitors as the NFL Draft brings tens of thousands of fans, media, and workers to the city this week, with some owners hoping for a sales boost and others preparing for logistical strain. Local shopkeepers say they are stocking extra inventory, adjusting staffing, and planning for heavier foot traffic as the three-day event pushes more people into neighborhoods near the action.

The draft, which runs April 23-25, is expected to draw between 500,000 and 700,000 attendees and place Pittsburgh in the national spotlight. Business owners in Oakland and nearby areas are weighing how to capture spending from visitors who will be buying food, drinks, transportation, and souvenirs while navigating road closures and crowds.

Some merchants see the event as a rare opportunity to recover from slow sales and reach new customers. Others are remaining cautious by noting that major events can shift traffic patterns and leave smaller businesses outside the main footprint struggling to benefit.

City and tourism officials have described the draft as a chance to showcase Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods and businesses to a national audience. For Oakland operators, the immediate focus is simpler. They want to ensure they have enough staff, enough stock, and enough patience to handle the rush.
