Allegheny County Democratic Committee Endorses Corey O’Connor for Mayor of Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

PITTSBURGH, PA – Corey O’Connor is going head-to-head with Mayor Ed Gainey in the
primary election for the mayor of Pittsburgh. On Sunday, March 9th, the Allegheny County
Democratic Committee voted to endorse Corey O’Connor for mayor. However, this vote did not
come without suspense.

The original vote had O’Connor winning 274 to 270 of Gainey. With the decision being close,
the committee was prompted to recount the vote and found that there were no changes in result,
confirming the endorsement.

This is the second straight time in the mayoral primary that the committee endorsed the current
mayors’ opponent. In 2021, the committee endorsed Ed Gainey over Bill Peduto for mayor and
Gainey ultimately won the position.

With the primary election being about a month and a half away, more endorsements for the
candidates are being announced.

O’Connor has already received endorsements from The Young Democrats of Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania Laborers’ Council, and State Senator Wayne Fontana. Many other unions and
Pittsburgh organizations have also endorsed O’Connor.

The endorsement for O’Connor by the Young Democrats was a surprise since they have
historically endorsed the incumbent. However, Ed Gainey has received other endorsements from
the Steel City Stonewall Democrats, the United Steelworkers and many local officials.
The primary election is set to happen on May 20th of this year, with the general mayoral election
set for November 4th.
