HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Authorities are investigating an attempted arson at the residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro late Tuesday night, officials confirmed Wednesday.
State police said an unknown suspect approached the governor’s official residence in Harrisburg and attempted to ignite a fire near an exterior wall around 11:30 p.m. Security personnel quickly responded, and the flames were extinguished before they could spread. No injuries were reported, and the extent of the damage appears minimal.
Governor Shapiro and his family were inside the residence at the time but were unharmed. A spokesperson for the governor said he is “grateful for the swift response of law enforcement and first responders” and remains focused on his duties.
The Pennsylvania State Police and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are leading the investigation. Officials have not released information on a possible motive or any suspects. Surveillance footage from the area is being reviewed.
Shapiro, a Democrat, was elected governor in 2022 after serving as the state’s attorney general. He has not commented publicly on the incident but is expected to speak later this week.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact state police.
