PITTSBURGH, PA (PTTP) – One of the most legendary moments in baseball history occurred on October 13, 1960, where Pirates legend Bill Mazeroski led the team to a championship with just one swing of his bat.
Tied at three games apiece, the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates battled for the 1960 World Series title in Game 7 at Forbes Field. The Yankees, led by legends like Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra, had dominated the series, but the Pirates refused to back down.
In a game that saw 19 total runs and multiple lead changes, the Pirates entered Game 7 in the bottom of the 9th inning with a tied score of 9. Leading off the inning and on the second pitch he saw, Bill Mazeroski launched a deep drive to left field – over the scoreboard out of Forbes Field.
Mazeroski’s home run gave the Pirates a 10-9 victory, securing their first championship since 1925 and to this day, it remains the only Game 7 walk-off home run in World Series history.
Over sixty years later, Mazeroski’s homer is still celebrated in Pittsburgh. Every October 13th, fans gather at the site of old Forbes Field to relieve the moment.
