BUFFALO, N.Y. (PTTP) – In an inspiring conclusion to a season marked by resilience and
courage, Damar Hamlin, safety for the Buffalo Bills and Pitt Panther alum, was recognized with
the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA) Comeback Player of the Year award.
At 25 years old, Hamlin prevailed over a near-tragic event that shocked the sports world and
rallied support from fans and players across the league. On January 2, 2023, the safety’s heart-stopping injury during a nationally televised game against the Cincinnati Bengals left him in critical condition.
However, after a remarkable recovery that included intense rehabilitation, Hamlin made a
triumphant return to the field in the 2024 season, emerging not just as a symbol of perseverance
but also as a top performer in his position. Hamlin’s journey back to the gridiron captivated the
nation. His recovery process involved months of physical therapy and mental conditioning, with
the support of his teammates, the Bills organization, and the broader National Football League (NFL) community playing a significant role in his comeback.
Damar’s story is a testament to his incredible determination and inspiration. Hamlin’s impact
extended beyond the field. His Chasing M’s Foundation, initially set up to support toy drives in
his hometown of McKees Rocks, PA, saw a surge in donations following his injury, highlighting
his positive influence in the community.
Presented annually, the PFWA Comeback Player of the Year Award honors a player who shows
perseverance in overcoming adversity from not being in the NFL the previous year, whether it be
through injury or personal matters. Hamlin’s return to professional football, less than a year after
his life-threatening event, embodies the spirit of this award.
As the NFL community celebrates Hamlin’s achievement, his story continues to serve as a
beacon of hope and resilience, resonating with fans and players alike.
