Pittsburgh, Pa. (PTTP) — The University of Pittsburgh just announced its new Doctor of
Chiropractic, or DC, program to begin in the fall semester of 2025. This program will be the first
of its kind in the state of Pennsylvania and for research-intensive public schools across the
country.
Applications for the new DC program open this upcoming fall of 2024. The first cohort,
expected to be about 40 students, will begin a year later, in the fall of 2025. Through Pitt’s
School of Health and Rehabilitation Science will be a three-year program or eight semesters,
focused mainly on spine and musculoskeletal problems.
The director of the new program, Dr. Michael Schneider, has years of experience in chiropractic
work and research here in Pittsburgh. He started with a private practice, returning to Pitt to get
his Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science in 2008. Schneider will lead the only chiropractic program in
the US directed by a faculty member with National Institutes of Health research funding.
The main objective of the DC plan is to integrate chiropractics so that it is not an alternative
medicine field. To achieve this, the program will include a lot of clinical work for students,
partnering with the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System in the area.
“I think this program and other programs at Pitt in healthcare professions are moving more
toward interprofessional models, which is a very cool way to teach any healthcare
disciplines,” says Schneider.
