Pączki Season in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (PTTP)- Each late winter, Pittsburgh residents begin searching for a specific pastry on grocery store shelves and around town. And each year, the Pittsburgh Reddit page consistently recommends this bakery. Located in the heart of Brookline, Party Cake Shop has become known as one the best places to get pączki in Pittsburgh.

Pączki (pronounced poonch-key or paunch-key) are Polish pastries that are similar to average stuffed doughnuts, but they are richer, fluffier, and have more interesting filling options available. These pastries are popular in places with large amounts of people of Eastern European descent, places like Pittsburgh and the Midwest.

Annually in the weeks before Lent, the Party Cake Shop begins offering pączki. Lent is the six-week period before Easter, during which Christians traditionally fast or give up a simple pleasure, like sweets. Pączki are made before Lent so people can indulge themselves before giving up their treats.

This year, Lent begins Wednesday, 22 Feb. If you would like to try pączki, this weekend is your last chance until next year.
