PITTSBURGH (PTTP) – The Pittsburgh Steelers have cut ties with quarterback Mitch Trubisky,
parting ways with the former No. 2 overall draft pick after two underwhelming seasons.
Trubisky’s departure from the Steelers organization was confirmed on Monday, marking the end
of his tenure with the team and thrusting him into free agency.
The quarterback joined the Steelers in March 2022 amid hopes that he would fill the void left by
the retired Ben Roethlisberger. However, Trubisky’s performance fell short of expectations,
leading to his eventual benching in favor of then-rookie Kenny Pickett after just four starts.
Despite receiving another opportunity to showcase his talents during the current season while
filling in for an injured Pickett, Trubisky failed to deliver, suffering losses against New England
and Indianapolis before ultimately being replaced by third-stringer Mason Rudolph.
The decision to release Trubisky marks the end of his stint with the Steelers and serves as a
strategic move to create approximately $11.5 million in salary cap space over the next two
seasons.
Trubisky’s time in Pittsburgh may not have lived up to the initial anticipation, but his departure
opens the door for the Steelers to explore other options as they seek to solidify their quarterback
position for the future.
On that note, speculation is swirling about the Pittsburgh Steelers potentially making a move for
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields, based on betting odds released by DraftKings.
Fields, known for his dual-threat ability, could inject a new dynamic into the Steelers’ offense.
While he is still refining his skills as a passer, Fields has showcased his playmaking ability,
particularly with his mobility. His performances with the Bears have demonstrated his potential
to elevate the Steelers’ offense to new heights.
The potential acquisition of Fields by the Steelers suggests a strategic move to bolster and
reshape their quarterback position for the upcoming season.
