Hillman Library Reinvention Nears Completion

PITTSBURGH (PTTP) – Students are starting to see noticeable differences in construction
projects at Pitt, mainly with the Hillman Library Reinvention.

Junior marketing major Rebecca Freedman discussed how this construction has impacted her
college experience:

“The Hillman library has greatly impacted my college experience by having me explore other
study spots and not just go directly to human. Hillman has now limited tables and limited spots,
so it’s really hard to find a spot. It has definitely greatly impacted my experience here.”

The renovation of the Hillman Library began in 2020. It is part of an extensive project aimed at
modernizing the library’s facilities, improving spaces for collaboration and enhancing its
technological offerings. The project has taken place in multiple phases and has cost
approximately $130 million. The first phase focused on building wide infrastructure, while the
second phase renovated the first and second floors. The library will have updated restrooms,
audio and video suites, and a computer lab.

The project is set to be completed in early 2025. For those interested in learning more about this

Q&A with Pitt’s Office of Planning, Design, and Construction:

Q: When did the Hillman Library renovation start?

A: We began the final phase of the renovation project in spring 2023. This phase encompasses the ground floor, core of the building, and the entry volume.

Q: Why did the University decide to renovate the library?

A: Per the library’s website: “Hillman Library will be the principal hub of intellectual activity on campus providing services, resources, and inspiring spaces—from vibrant to serene—that advance academic study, stimulate innovation in knowledge creation, encourage intellectual exploration and creativity, and foster energetic collaborative exchange.”

Q: Have there been any issues during construction?

A: Throughout this process, our goal has been to keep the library as operational as possible. In order to do this, we took a phased approach to construction, which allowed us to complete the work floor-by-floor. Doing so meant that this project took longer, but it allowed us to keep this core resource available to promote student success. We appreciate everyone’s patience as this project progressed and we’re really excited to be opening before the fall semester.

Q: What is the final product going to offer students?

A: Phase 4 renovated approximately 100,000 square feet on the ground floor and constructed an entry volume at the northeast corner of the building. A new staircase connects the ground and first floor levels, and the building core has been upgraded, including all restrooms and elevators. Ground floor work includes new finishes, furniture, and space reconfiguration to support library programs, mechanical upgrades, new fireproofing, energy efficient lighting, new power and data distribution.

Q: When is the projected date for the renovation to be completed?

A: The project will be complete this summer.
