PITTSBURGH, PA (PTTP) – A hospital shooting in York, Pennsylvania, on February 22, 2025,
left six people injured and two dead, including police officer Andrew Duarte.
The suspect, 49-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, entered UPMC Memorial’s ICU, took staff hostage, and opened fire. Duarte, a member of the West York Police, was killed during the confrontation. Authorities are investigating the motive, which remains unclear, but the suspect had visited the hospital days prior. The incident is under investigation, including whether Duarte’s death was due to gunfire from the suspect or officers.
Later that day after the scene commenced, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro made a
statement, claiming that the hospital is safe and secure and members of the PA State Police are on the ground responding alongside the local and federal partners.
That evening, mourners gathered at the West York Borough Police Department to hold a vigil for the department’s fallen officer.
