‘It’s been a long time coming’: Yendell earns All-America status

Pitt Swim and Dive

PITTSBURGH, PA (PTTP) — 5th year senior Sophie Yendell became Pitt Swim and Dive’s first AllAmerican since 1986 at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving National Championships
last week. Yendell swam a 21.66 in the 50 Freestyle to take 5th place and clinch the All American title.

According to Yendell, this award has been a “long time coming.”

“My first year, I don’t even know what I got, but I know it was nowhere near what I needed to
make finals. Last year, I got 17th or 18th, and that was really gutting for me. I didn’t know if I
wanted to take a 5th year, but it has been an amazing experience. Going from just missing out on
making finals last year to finishing in the top five this year…it’s amazing, and I’m so happy I get
to end my career this way.”

A native of Tamworth, England, Yendell was excited to have her parents supporting her, as well
as her team.

“My parents managed to get here to watch me, and that means so much. I get to end my career
with a bang, and I’m so honored to be the first A-Finalist in a while. The whole team has been
behind me, and I’m just thankful I get to show what this team has been working towards.”
