University of Pittsburgh Honors Jerome Lane at men’s basketball game

Pittsburgh, PA (PTTP) – Jerome Lane had made his way back to Pitt on Jan. 25 at the men’s basketball game against Wake Forest where he was honored by the university.

Jan. 25 represents the day in 1988 when Lane performed a tomahawk dunk in a game against Providence that shattered a backboard. This would delay the game and television broadcast by thirty minutes. During the dunk, Bill Raftery was a broadcaster during the game and made the significantly remembered quote: “Send it in Jerome.”

More recently, in 2018, the University of Pittsburgh introduced the Athletics Hall of Fame. Lane was also inducted into the University of Pittsburgh’s Athletic Hall of Fame just last year in 2022. This class included athletes Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson, Larry Harris, Rande Stottlemyer, Pat Santoro, Keisha Demas, Jerry Richey, Debbie Lewis, Angela Lopez Callahan, Ann Marie Lucanie, and Donnie DeMarino Sanft.

The first one-thousand students in Pitt’s student section, The Oakland Zoo, were all given shirts with the number thirty-four and “Lane” on the back. The first one-thousand and five hundred students were given a voucher for a shot glass inscribed with Bill Raftery’s famous quote “Send it in Jerome” to commemorate this historical moment in the University of Pittsburgh’s history.
