WASHINGTON (PTTP) – President Donald Trump reaffirmed his position on Iran’s nuclear program at his State of the Union address this past Tuesday.
The United States (US) and Iran have not seen eye to eye on Tehran’s nuclear program for decades. The US fears continued uranium enrichment in Iran will result in nuclear weapons. The Islamic Republic has not publicly stated that they have or will create a weapon, only that the current nuclear program is focused on civilian purposes. The last nuclear deal between the US and Iran, achieved by Former President Barack Obama, ended in 2018 in President Trump’s previous term. Eight years later, no replacement deal has been made.
In April of 2025, Trump proposed new nuclear negotiations with Iran. Months of standstill and tensions with Israel resulted in the suspension of negotiations and the US striking Iran’s nuclear facilities in June. Now, Iran faces an economic crisis, in part due to UN sanctions for failing to uphold nuclear commitments. Additionally, the country is still reeling from widespread protests and government crackdowns in January.
The US is currently amassing its largest military presence in the Middle East since the Iraq war. In his State of the Union address, President Trump called Iran the “world’s number one sponsor of terror.” Both the US and Iran have stated they prefer diplomacy to the use of force. However, President Trump has stated he is willing to use force to elicit the deal he desires.
Three negotiation sessions between US and Iranian officials have taken place. Another round of talks will occur next week in Vienna, Austria.
