PITTSBURGH (PTTP) – On Saturday, March 23, 2024 the Heinz History Center will open a
brand new exhibit. A Woman’s Place: How Women Shaped Pittsburgh will feature women who
have made an incredible impact on Pittsburgh and the world.
The exhibit will begin with the 1800s and track achievements and milestones into the present
day, taking an interactive approach. The Heinz History Center has assembled 250 artifacts,
immersive experiences, and archival images to bring visitors an unbelievable, in-depth
exploration of women’s history in Western Pennsylvania.
Notably, the exhibit will display the original handbag renowned journalist Nellie Bly took with
her on her 72-day journey around the world. Other items include: original sketches from Peggy
Owen Skillen who was involved in the making of “Sesame Street”, Sophie Masloff’s
inauguration dress as the first and only female mayor of Pittsburgh, and the Olympic jersey of
basketball star, Swin Cash.
A couple weeks ago, USA Today named the Heinz History Center America’s best history
museum. A Woman’s Place is the first new exhibition to open following this award. Visit the
