PITTSBURGH (PTTP)— With Trump’s research and development budget for the fiscal year of 2026 to increase American competitiveness, the funding cuts since last year in September has resulted in disturbances in translating research to commercially sustainable uses in the city of Pittsburgh.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 11 federal agencies that provide funding to some companies in Pittsburgh are still in the process of being reauthorized in Congress. With the inclusion of DOGE’s activity in the last two years, there’s been a concern towards Pittsburgh’s “valley of death”, where a lack of transfer of innovative ideas founded in academic institutions is not being seen in Pittsburgh’s business sphere.
However, conflicts of interests may arise from the responsibilities and the fiscal endeavors that come with owning a small business as a faculty, university staff, or post-doctoral student. At the University of Pittsburgh’s Conflict of Interest Committee and Conflict of Interest Division (COI), the office assists researchers with federal regulations that come with those conflicts of interests, including Pitt employees who consult or advise for other companies or situations, by placing guardrails on what researchers are allowed to do with commodifying their research. This can range in pursuits that could “interfere with University business decisions or with the University’s core missions of research, scholarship and teaching,” according to the COI office. This also includes ensuring research data is not fabricated and lacks unconscious bias, and allowing principal investigators, or lead researchers, that have founded university licensed startup companies and conduct research with the university that could affect the value of the company and its services or technologies.
The COI office ensures that university-licensed companies and research can swiftly transition into the city without the expense of sacrificing research ethics, professional ingenuity and decision-making, and the priority of Pitt’s position as an academic and research institution.
