PITTSBURGH, PA (PTTP)- A special election will be held on March 25, 2025, in the 35th
district of Pennsylvania. The election will be held due to the recent passing of Democrat Matt
Gergely on January 19, 2025. Gergely suffered a medical emergency before the new year. His
family has opted not to disclose any further personal details. Gergely, 45 years old, served his
community for years before being elected. Gergely was a highly respected member of the
Pennsylvania House.
Gergely was a McKeesport native and had served since February of 2023. He served in the
House after winning a special election, due to Austin Davis being appointed Lieutenant governor
of Pennsylvania
With Gergely’s seat now vacant, the Democratic advantage in the House is diminished, leaving
the House in a deadlock at 101-101. Legislation will not be passed unless a party receives a vote
from the opposition.
Both parties have now appointed their candidates to run. On January 31, the republican
committee selected Charles Davis to run. Davis has served on the White Oak Borough Council
for over 20 years. The democratic candidate was selected on February 1, as Daniel E Goughnour
was selected. Goughnour, from McKeesport, similarly to Gergely, has served as a police officer
there.
Voters located in the 35th district feature the following areas of Allegheny County: Clairton,
Duquesne, Homestead, Liberty, Lincoln, McKeesport, Munhall, Port Vue, South Versailles
Township, Versailles, West Homestead, Whitaker, White Oak, and district three, four, and 15 in
West Mifflin. Voters will have until March 10th to register to vote for their desired candidate, and
all ballots, both mail-in and civilian absentee, will be due by 8 pm on March 25.
