PITTSBURGH, Pa. (PTTP) – Pitt alumnus Julie Sokolow has returned to the University of Pittsburgh after a decade of work as a filmmaker, musician and writer. She is the subject of this week’s Alumni Spotlight.
Sokolow graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2010 after studying psychology, film and english writing. In the following decade, she delved into the process of creation using skills she learned and connections she made while at Pitt.
Sokolow says she has enjoyed creating documentary films that profile individuals she finds fascinating. She has directed multiple films including Woman on Fire, a film documenting Brooke Guinan, the first openly transgender woman firefighter in the FDNY.
“That’s a film I’m really proud of… That combination of art and advocacy is really important to me.”
Music is also a big part of Sokolow’s life. Not only did she put out an album that was recorded while she was living in her undergrad dorm, but she also scores some of her own films.
Sokolow has now returned to the University of Pittsburgh in pursuit of her master’s degree in social work. She hopes to be able to take what she loved from the process of making art and apply it to work in a more social setting.
