PITTSBURGH (PTTP) —The University of Pittsburgh baseball season begins this week. The team is very different from last year, with more than half the players being newcomers. This comes after three players made the jump to the MLB this past offseason, two of whom were drafted in the seventh round. The team looks to improve on the sub-.500 season they had last year.

This season is headlined by two players being ranked in the top 50 in their positions in the preseason rankings. First baseman Luke Cantwell was ranked the No. 5 in the position in the country, first in the ACC. Jayden Melendez was ranked the No. 33 catcher in the nation. While both respect the ranking, they are trying not to think about it and have focused on the success of the team.

New this season is the admission prices for games. All home games hosted at the Charles L. Cost Field will be free for all fans in attendance. This is to get more people into the stadium, creating an exciting game-day environment. Both coaches and players are excited to see the stadium packed with fans.

The season kicks off this Friday, February 14th against Eastern Michigan in Florida.
