GREENSBURG, PA (PTTP)- The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg has been approved to receive federal funding to launch a TRIO program that aids first generation college students, students that come from a background with low income, and students with disabilities.
The school was successful in receiving the $273,000 grant for this program after two unsuccessful attempts in years prior. The money will go towards resources for student opportunities as well as salary for newly hired faculty that will run the program. Pitt-Greensburg must demonstrate that the program contributes to student success and have enough qualifying members to continue receiving the grant annually.
The TRIO program will serve as a liaison between the resources the school has to offer and its students. The program is targeted to aid students that would typically not have people in their life that can help them manage life in college. The University of Pittsburgh has TRIO programs at their Oakland and Bradford campuses and have found great success helping students in need. Retention and graduation rates are higher for those who enroll in the program overall. Pitt-Greensburg intends on enrolling their first group of students by the end of the spring semester, and they plan to have upwards of 100 students in the program by the fall of 2026.
