PITTSBURGH (PTTP) — Students at the University of Pittsburgh are finding discipline, confidence, and community through the Pitt Shotokan Karate Club.

The club welcomes students of all experience levels to learn traditional Japanese karate through weekly practices focused on technique, conditioning, and self-defense. Under the guidance of instructor Mike Duray, members practice strikes, blocks, and kata (choreographed patterns of movements used in martial arts training)

Duray says karate is about more than physical strength. The sport emphasizes patience, focus, and respect, lessons that extend beyond the training space.

Members say joining the karate club has helped them stay active while also providing a break from the stress of academics. For many students, the club offers both a physical workout and a mental reset.

As interest in club sports continues to grow at Pitt, the Shotokan Karate Club hopes to introduce more students to the discipline and tradition of martial arts.

Whether students are stepping onto the mat for the first time or have been training for years, members say the club provides an opportunity to build skills, confidence, and friendships along the way.
