Pittsburgh Pirates Win Season Opener against the Cincinnati Reds

On March 30, 2023 the Pittsburgh Pirates opened their season close to home at an away game in Ohio against the Cincinnati Reds.

This year the Pirates bring back outfielder Andrew McCutchen who was a part of the organization from 2009-2017. McCutchen put back on the black and gold after going to play for the Giants, Yankees, Phillies, and Brewers as he made his way back to Pittsburgh for the 2023 MLB season.

The Reds started out hot by scoring first in the very 1st inning of the game but the Pirates took over by the 3rd and 4th coming out on top going into the 5th inning up 4-2. But the Reds immediately came back in the 5th inning by scoring two more times to tie the game.

In this game Pittsburgh’s Oneil Cruz has his first homer of the season in the 3rd inning which will become his 6th longest home run of his career.

Pitcher Mitch Keller had an average four-seam fastball speed of 95.9 mph with his fastest ball being 97.5 and his slowest being 93.9.

With a quiet 6th and 7th inning for both teams the Pirates ultimately scored again in the 8th inning which would then stamp the win for them with a final score of 5-4.
