PITTSBURGH, PA (AP) — In a groundbreaking innovation set to redefine mobility, two
students from Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University have introduced “Frogwalkers,” strap-on
mobility shoes designed to move through any terrain with ease, offering a dynamic and more
efficient experience.
Developed over the course of five years, Frogwalkers consist of a rugged 10-wheel
aluminum-based design engineered to conquer even the most challenging landscapes. “We make
walking more fun,” creators state, highlighting what they value in consumer experience.
Central to the Frogwalkers’ performance is their integration with artificial intelligence, a
technological advancement that adapts seamlessly to any terrain users may endure. Powered by
ShiftOS, an in-house software, the AI intelligently adjusts the shoes’ settings, ensuring a safe and
efficient journey regardless of the environment.
“One of the great things about the shoes…is the ability for them to interact with each other on a
really quick level…and having really good functionality…are the primary features,” explained
one of the inventors, reflecting on their success in the Frogwalkers’ model and evolution. With
the ability to walk three times faster than conventional means, these innovative shoes offer users
the freedom to explore their surroundings like never before.
The journey from concept to reality wasn’t without its challenges. Over nine generations of
prototypes were carefully crafted and refined to achieve the perfect balance of performance,
comfort, and functionality. Each model brought the creators closer to their goal of
revolutionizing walking mobility.
The unveiling of Frogwalkers marks a significant milestone in the world of personal mobility,
showcasing the innovative spirit and ingenuity of Pittsburgh’s tech community. As the creators
envision a future where walking transcends its traditional convention, Frogwalkers aim to lead
the way into a new era of exploration and pave the way for the tech community.
