PRT Service Cuts to Impact Key Pittsburgh Routes

PITTSBURGH, PA (PTTP) — Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) will reduce service on several
bus and light rail routes next month due to budget constraints and staffing shortages.

“This is not a decision we take lightly,” said PRT CEO Katharine Kelleman. “Public transit is
vital, but financial pressures force these adjustments.”

Cuts include reductions on the 61 and 71 series buses, which serve key corridors in Oakland,
Squirrel Hill, and East Liberty, and fewer weekend light rail trips on the Red and Blue lines.

Advocates warn these reductions will disproportionately impact low-income riders, students, and
workers. “People who rely on these routes daily will be left with fewer options,” said Sarah
Jennings of Pittsburghers for Public Transit.

PRT cites declining funding and driver shortages as key factors but is exploring long-term
solutions. The revised schedules take effect May 6, with details available on PRT’s website.
