PITTSBURGH, PA (PTTP) – Governor Josh Shapiro announced in late October that he was going to invest $62 million in a 10-year plan, to give Downtown Pittsburgh a new look. As part of the new plan, Market Square is set for a new transformation, with an all new modern look. Pittsburgh’s City Planning Commision approved the revitalization plan, indicating that construction can happen as early as April 1, 2025.
The revamping will include the removal of the parking lane, as well as the cobblestone streets surrounding the middle of Market Square. Concrete and granite pavers plan to take over for a flat surface and road.
Many surrounding areas, business, and restaurants have mixed emotions about the changes that are to come. Jake Hughes, head golf associate at Five Iron Golf, states how he is excited for this upcoming change, hoping it will lead to more foot traffic for his business. The manager at The Yard, Samantha Fowler, talks about how she is trying to stay optimistic about the change, but wishes the city would focus on more important things including the safety of Downtown and Market Square.
Some businesses declined to talk about the upcoming changes, indicating that they have different opinions on it versus their managers and company. Business owners also declined stating that they were under contract and could not give out any information at the time.
The city plans to finish Market Squares reconstruction before Pittsburgh hosts the NFL Draft next April in 2026.
