PITTSBURGH, PA (PTTP) — A roof collapsed on the 300 Block of Semple Street on Friday
March 14 around 5:30 pm. University of Pittsburgh students, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, were
gathered in the area behind the houses and on the roof. There were many people on the roof
causing it to collapse onto the people below it. The collapse was said to have come without
warning to the people on it and below it.
Student, Alexandra Hill, was in a nearby house at the time when the roof collapsed and said “we
heard a really loud crash outside and I looked outside one of the windows and saw a guy with a
big gash across his chest.” She initially thought that a fight might have broken out, but when she
went out the back door she said, “I could see the roof falling into the crowd and a bunch of
people were trying to pick it back up.” Alexandra stated that she was in shock and could not
believe that a roof had collapsed just next door. A girl was carried into the house with a head
injury and she worked to help her and said that everyone was calling 911. Alexandra reached out
to people she knew were there and she and her friends stayed at the house a little after to make
sure everyone was ok. She said, “I hope people think about this in the future and remember that
this is something that could happen, we all have to keep that in mind.”
There were many people injured and 16 sent to the hospital. People were treated on the scene and
also transported for treatment. Out of the students that were sent to the hospital, 13 were in stable
condition and 3 were in serious, but stable condition.
