Soccer Season Kicks Off in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Riverhounds

PITTSBURGH, PA (PTTP)—The Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ season in the USL Championship is officially underway. The club has made the playoffs in each of the last ten seasons and hopes to improve its popularity in Pittsburgh. Popularity for the club has been increasing as the team has had continuing success. The Riverhounds credit some of that popularity to the growing attention to the University of Pittsburgh’s soccer programs.

Both the Panthers and Riverhounds have had their popularity rise concurrently. Their successes started at roughly the same time as the soccer boom hit the city. The programs are also connected as both of the head coaches are friends and the two teams play each other each preseason. The rise in popularity has also created excitement for Pittsburgh’s newest sports team.

The Pittsburgh Riveters will be the newest addition to the city’s soccer landscape. The women’s team, which will play in the USL W League, will kick off their inaugural season later this year. The formation of the team comes off the back of a massive spike in interest in women’s sports. The team is affiliated with the Riverhounds, as the two are closely connected. They will play their first game on May 16 against the Cleveland Force at Highmark Stadium in Station Square in Pittsburgh.
