“They’re throwing trans people under the bus”: Counseling center faces backlash after event name change

On Feb. 24, Pitt’s Counseling Center faced backlash after briefly renaming an event from “LGBT Peer Support Space” to “LGB Peer Support Space,” omitting the “T” for transgender. The change was quickly reversed, but many community members remainmconcerned about the impact of the decision. Several community members took to social media after the change to express concern. Pitt alum and civil rights activist Kate Koenig believes the change is due to federal legislation that threatens to cut funding for schools that continue to fund programs that support diversity, equity and inclusion.

Pitt celebrates and acknowledges the importance of Women’s History Month with EmpowHER

Pitt’s campus recreation is acknowledging Women’s History Month this March with their Panther Fit wellness series, a collection of physical and mental health activities designed to motivate and inspire women to come together in athletics. This is the second year of their Panther Fit wellness series, EmpowHER, a collection of events on campus. This series offers diverse activities including small group training, climbing nights, soccer tournaments and a self-defense class throughout March. Brandyn Ott,
associate director of wellness and recreation programs, believes that “empowering women through movement is necessary.”

New mural coming to Hillman Library

To commemorate the upcoming completion of the library’s renovation, students are working with a community artist on an 8-by-32 foot mural that will be displayed on the first floor of the library. The mural is a collaboration between Pittsburgh artist Alison Zapata and eight Pitt students. After deciding on a basic theme of the history of communication, Zapata said she worked with students to choose items featured in the mural, including cave paintings of Lascaux, the Rosetta Stone, human connection and
even emojis.
