Gisele Fetterman: “Take the thing that keeps you up at night and work on that”

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (PTTP)- A shipping container as an anniversary gift? Albeit unusual, this is exactly what the Second Lady of Pennsylvania wanted.

Gisele Barreto Fetterman, wife of Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman, is the founder of Free Store 15104.

The Free Store, located inside the repurposed shipping container, offers a place for individuals and stores to donate unwanted or unsellable items.

Anyone in need can shop the food, clothes, and household goods; no cost, no questions asked.

Fetterman sought to remove the “dehumanizing barriers” that may prevent people from getting help. “You shouldn’t have to prove that you’re hungry,” she says.

At age 8, Fetterman came to the United States from Brazil as an undocumented child immigrant.
From time to time, her own family relied on food pantries. They also furnished their first home entirely with roadside finds.

“I think all of my work comes from an immigrant’s perspective… I have a unique perspective to this kind of work because I experienced it,” says Fetterman.

  1. Another wonderful woman-of-colour standing up and reaching out to those in need. Thank You for demonstrating what it means to live in a “Village”.
