Police Department Shifts: Pittsburgh Implements New Operational Changes While University Police Remain Unaffected

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (PTTP) – The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police is introducing several changes
within their department.

As of Monday, February 26, Pittsburgh officers will now work four days per week for ten hours
per day instead of the traditional five days per week for eight hours.

Other changes to the Pittsburgh police include a reduction in overnight staff for the city. From
the hours of 3 a.m. to 7 a.m., desk officers will be replaced with an online and telephone
reporting unit that will respond to the majority of calls.
Calls that are not ongoing emergencies, such as theft and harassment, will also be directed to the
online and telephone reporting unit.

The Bureau has faced staffing issues, prompting these changes designed to increase officer
recruitment and maintain retention.
These department changes of the Pittsburgh police will not affect the University of Pittsburgh
police staffing and hours.

In a statement from Pitt Police Chief Holly Lamb, “The University of Pittsburgh Police
Department has a strong and mutually beneficial working relationship with the City of Pittsburgh
Police. We will continue to collaborate and partner with city police in the same manner as before
these changes were implemented.”

Despite recent changes in the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police staffing and hours, the University of
Pittsburgh police will not experience any changes.
