PITTSBURGH (PTTP) — The Pitt News is the premiere place for Pitt students to find out what’s happening on- and off-campus. This week, that means looking into the good, the bad, and the ugly of South Oakland housing.
Pitt Patty’s, or University of Pittsburgh students’ celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, brings shamrocks, ginger wigs, and darties throughout South Oakland. However, this day does not always bring the luck of the Irish. Last year, a porch roof collapsed under the weight of tens of people sitting atop it. Many were injured and 16 hospitalized. Now, students reflect on how to celebrate Pitt Patty’s in the aftermath. To find out more, check out Amanda Buchman’s article, “‘It was a wakeup call’: Students reevaluate Pitt Patty’s traditions one year after roof collapse.”
Partiers are not the only ones scrutinizing their South Oakland lifestyle. Students living off-campus have a new way to share their renting experiences. In “‘Knowledge is power’: Rate Yinz Landlord offers students a voice on Oakland landlords,” Jamese Platt discusses Rate Yinz Landlord, a new website for students to anonymously review landlords. This service plans to increase transparency in the renting process by being a resource for students venturing out of dorms. Its creators, the Renters First Ad Hoc Committee from Pitt’s Student Government Board, hope to continue this project in subsequent academic years.
