BUDAPEST, HUNGARY (PTTP)- Former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who led the Christian-nationalist party Fidesz-KDNP for 16 years, has accepted defeat in Hungary’s 2026 Parliamentary elections on Sunday to Péter Magyar, leader of the opposition Tisza Party. After 16 years and Orbán’s fourth consecutively elected government, analysts have stated that the electoral probability of Orbán’s opposers to succeed was in their odds, as Tisza won a landslide two-thirds majority of the 199 parliamentary seats in Hungary’s National Assembly, which is a crucial validation of the party’s ability to amend Hungary’s constitution after Orbán’s rule.
At the banks of the Danube River in Budapest, cheers from hundreds of opposition supporters could still be heard for several hours after the results were announced, while Magyar reiterated during the celebration to rebuild Hungary’s ties with the EU and NATO. The end of Orbán’s regime was seen as Hungary’s liberation from democratic backsliding and prevailing corruption, as well as accusations of kleptocracy within his administration and the destruction of checks and balances in governance through the weakening of judicial independence.
Péter Magyar’s rise was demanding, but not entirely unexpected. For several years, the 45-year-old politician and lawyer was an avid supporter of Orbán and was a former member of Fidesz until he resigned in 2024 to form a new political platform. His grievances with the ruling Fidesz and the established opposition amid the Katalin Novák presidential pardon scandal led to the rise of the relatively unknown TISZA party and soon made him a prominent opposition figure to Orbán’s Eurosceptic sentiments.
Reforms Magyar has promised during his campaign include expanding media freedoms and reviving Hungary’s economy. However, as a result of Orbán’s violation of democratic standards and his persistent backing of the Kremlin during the Russian-Ukrainian War, the EU has frozen billions of dollars’ worth of funding since 2022.
